Ecole de physique des Houches

Les Houches is a village located in Chamonix valley, in the French Alps. Established in 1951, the Physics School is situated at 1150 m above sea level in natural surroundings, with breathtaking views on the Mont-Blanc mountain range.

Les Houches Physics School is UMS 2002 run by Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA). The 5 school partners of are UGA, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA), the Institut National Polytechnique (Grenoble-INP), and the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon).

Travel

For international travelers, the best option is to fly in/out Geneva airpot. There are several shuttle services from the airport to Les Houches available (see list here). A good option we recommend you to use is Mountain Drop-Offs which offers shared-van and door-to-door services for about 35€ one way. Directions to Les Houches by car or by train can also be found on this link.

Accommodation

An individual room will be booked for everyone (lecturers and participants) on the school site for the duration of your stay. We will send the detailed assignment of rooms shortly before the school begins. Please see the map here for more practical information.

Arrival and departure times

The school will be open on Monday May 13th starting at 3pm. Please do not come earlier, the building will be closed. The school will end on Friday May 24th at 3pm. All rooms must be vacated by 10am at the latest that day. It will not be possible to extend your stay longer at the school. Please arrange your travel accordingly. Participants are required to stay for the full duration of the school.

Registration fee

Participants (Non CNRS): The registration fee for is 550€ 450€ (including taxes). It includes all costs of your stay in Les Houches : the room, three meals per day, coffee breaks and many other amenities that the school offers. This fee must be paid in full while you will be at Les Houches within the first three days of the school. The school applies this special rate only to students and postocs, so please bring proof of your status with you (student ID card, or certificate from your institute in French or in English) otherwise the full rate will apply (935€). The fee can be paid by credit card (except American Express), cash or checks in euros. There is also the possibility to pay with laboratory credit card by phone within two weeks before the school begins (after April 30) with Les Houches office at this number: +33 4 57 04 10 40.

Participants (CNRS employees): The registration fee as well as your travel expanses are covered by CNRS. To arrange your trip, please contact "la formation permanente" of your Délégation régionale.

Lecturers: The fee is covered by the school budget.

Poster & contributed talks sessions

We will organize two poster sessions (one per week). The poster format can be as big as A0. There will also be room for short oral contributions from the participants. Selected participants still have the possibility to submit or update their abstract on the school website until March 29th. See the full program and abstracts here.

Hands-on sessions

We will organize three hands-on sessions that aim at putting some of the basics seen during lectures into practice. Two sessions will focus on data analysis methods (from remote probes in space physics, and from laboratory experiments), and one on numerical simulations (MHD and PIC). These sessions will be interactive, please bring your laptop with you to follow the exercise proposed by the tutors. We will send more information on the softwares to install shortly before the school begins to avoid compatibility and installation time overheads.

Journal club sessions

Two journal club sessions will also be organized. Lecturers will propose a list a papers from which the participant will chose a few to present and discuss in small groups.
